Leader Dog Training
The Lions actively support the Leader Dogs for the Blind program which empowers people who are blind, visually impaired or deaf-blind with skills for a lifetime of independent travel, opening doors that may seem to have closed with the loss of sight. Working with the Leader Dog program a member of the club has also been a volunteer puppy raiser for Belair.
Eyeglass Recycling
153 million people have uncorrected vision problems, many of which are quickly diagnosed and easy to correct. To meet this need, Lions Clubs collect used eyeglasses and for less than $0.08 provide a pair of recycled eyeglasses and change someone’s life. The Bowie Lions have a number of locations where you can donate your used eyeglasses to be recycled. You can see a list of locations or use this map to find a drop site near you.
Vision Screening
Lions recognize the benefits of prevention, education and early detection of vision issues. Vision problems are not only frustrating and interfere with daily living, but some conditions can lead to more serious issues if not corrected promptly. This is why Lions sponsor vision screenings. A vision screening is not a substitute for a complete eye and vision evaluation and the Lions always recommend following up a screening with an eye care professional.
Exams & Glasses
The Bowie Lions encourage everyone to see an eye care professional on a regular basis. Unfortunately many of those who need exams and eyeglasses simply cannot afford them. Realizing that clear vision is key to healthy living, school and employment, we work with local optometrists to arrange eye exam and glasses for qualified candidates.
