What is SHARE?
Self Help And Resource Exchange
SHARE is a non-profit organization offering a nutritious food package
of about $30. value for $16. plus two hours of community service.
SHARE is not a government program and is funded by the price of the
food package. The package consists of 6 to 8 pounds of meat, 8 to 10 fresh
fruits and vegetables, plus some staple items. By pooling monies across the
nation, SHARE purchases food at wholesale prices and passes the savings
on to participants in the program. The food is distributed by a network of
host organizations. The Bowie Lions Club has been a host organization for
over 13 years. Anyone may participate by giving two hours of community service
and paying $16. for the package. There are no income or other eligibility
guidelines. People become involved to save money and help others. The community
service requirement is met by doing anything without pay outside your own
household. SHARE packages are distributed at the Bowie Senior Center,
14900 Health Center Drive, normally on the fourth Saturday of the month.
You pay for any packages you order for the next month at the time you pick
up the current month's package.
