Enjoy Lionism The first Lions Club was organized in Chicago, IL, in 1917 by a local businessman named Melvin Jones. The Lions organization has grown into the World's largest service organization, the International Association of Lions Clubs, with a membership of more than 1,400,000 men and women in 40,000 clubs representing 167 countries and geographic units. The Bowie Lions Club was established in 1962. Our members pledge unselfish service to our communities and to those less fortunate than ourselves. Club members volunteer their time and energy to a variety of fund-raising efforts; all of the profits are designated for charitable uses. In typical years, through the efforts of our members and friends, we raise money by having book sales, running concessions at Antique Days, selling Christmas trees, as well as soliciting contributions twice a year. While we support the programs of the International Association, our primary concern is to serve the local community.
